Thursday, September 28: Rhetorical Vocabulary (interruption schemes); Activity and notes on Multi-Level paragraph and sentence leveling; Burger Village activity. IF YOU WERE ABSENT: See Mrs. W next class to receive handout on Multi-Level Paragraph and notes for CN. HOMEWORK FOR ALL: Revised and printed Final Snippet Memoir due tomorrow when you walk in the door!!
Wednesday, September 27: Writer's Workshop with Snippet Memoir! IF YOU WERE ABSENT: Hopefully you got me a physical copy of your memoir before school today. If you did, I will have it available for you to pick up with some peer editing. Reminder: Final Draft and one edited draft of Snippet Memoir is due (PRINTED) when you walk in the door on Friday.
Tuesday, September 26: Half day! Set up Rhetorical Vocabulary Foldable; Choice Reading
Monday, September 25: Happy Heat Half-Day! Received requirement for Snippet Memoir (see below); Showed Models of previous Snippet Memoirs (See below). TWO copies of your Snippet Memoir is due for Workshop on Wednesday.
FriYAY, September 22: Watch two James Frey vs. Oprah videos (see below); begin brainstorming for Snippet Memoir for next week. IF YOU WERE ABSENT: Please sketch in your notebooks a bird's eye view from one or multiple places in your life that may hold many potential memories. As you sketch, write down words that pertain to said memories. This should conjure up enough information for your Snippet Memoir (only 30-one minute of your life) that we will work on in class next week. Upon walking into class Monday, you should have your idea cemented and should have written down many details, dialogue, and organization ideas in your CN.
Thursday, September 21: Seniors meet in Collaboration room for MAVIN Presentation with Mrs. Gammans and Mr. Peter Whitehead; juniors choice read. IF YOU WERE ABSENT: See Mrs. W for a run down on what MAVIN actually is, choice read to stay on pace
Wednesday, September 20: Book Talk (A Million Little Pieces); Choice Reading; Students will read and annotate and write four "read and react" statements in their CRL based on one of the following articles: James Frey Wikipedia or "How Oprahness Trumped Truthiness" (op-ed article by James Frey). IF YOU WERE ABSENT: Please click on one of the above articles and read and annotate. In CRJ, write four "read and react" statements with a direct quote from the article and your reaction to that section of the piece.
Tuesday, September 19: Review focus analysis from page 9 of The Glass Castle. Mrs. Whetstone modeled analysis thinking of Wall's writing craft from page 138--where Jeannette starts school at Welsh-- and notes in CRJ (a continuation from yesterday); students picked their own section from book to analyze Walls' craft, writing specific notes in notebook; shared analysis in small groups. IF YOU WERE ABSENT: Pick a section from The Glass Castle, analyze the writing strategies that she used (description, dialogue, structure) and write notes in CRJ and show Mrs. W tomorrow at school. If you do not have your book with you, click here, to read and analyze from Page 11 of digital book.
Monday, September 18: Book Talk (What If?); Choice-Reading, Mrs. Whetstone recording new required-choice reading books; Essential Question with quick write; identify areas of potential "truthfulness" from page 9 of The Glass Castle. IF YOU WERE ABSENT: Be sure to have choice reading book upon coming to class tomorrow, if available, read for 20 minutes tonight and report your new book to Mrs. Whetstone. In CRJ, respond to the following prompt (five minutes of writing);
"What is the line that is considered "too far" for embellishing writing in memoirs to include details and descriptions?"
Friday, September 15: In-class Focused Response #2 (FCAs were covered yesterday in class); choice reading. IF YOU WERE ABSENT: If you emailed Mrs. W, then you will then be able to get the prompt from her on Monday and complete the response ASAP.
Thursday, September 14: Book Talks (Columbine, A Mother's Reckoning); Writer's Workshop. IF YOU WERE ABSENT: Edit your Focused Response #1 from yesterday. Then double-check for --or add if you didn't have the following:
- Fundamentals in the introduction (Author's Name, Title of book, specific "type" of piece (in this case, "memoir"), year of publication
- Claim that clearly establishes the parenting style of Rex and Rosemary
- Direct quotes--properly formatted with citation, page number, and lead in before quote
- Elaborated body paragraphs
- Count total number of words (by paragraph) and then total at end
Wednesday, September 13: Writing contest (writemichigan.org); Book Talk (October Sky By Homer Hickam); Focused Response In-Class Writing #1:
- “Try not to look down on those other children,” Mom said. It’s not their fault that they’ve been brainwashed into believing silly myths” (Walls 39).
- “Years from now, when all the junk they got is broken and long forgotten,” Dad said, “you’ll still have your stars” (41).
- Analyze how the preceding quotes reflect the parenting style of Jeannette Walls’ mother and father. Support your answer with at least two examples from The Glass Castle.
Tuesday, September 12: Writing Contest and ALPS Volunteer Opportunity (see "College Bound" tab if interested); Highlight three talking points/details from yesterday's written response and share with partner; group work and poster showing key characteristics for writing a "good" memoir; share with class; choice-reading. IF YOU WERE ABSENT: highlight three talking points from yesterday's written response and share with Mrs. W upon return; keep reading The Glass Castle and taking notes.
